Nitpickers: a professional lice salon
The idea for our business, The Nit Pickers, was conceived soon after Mr. & Mrs. Liceberg and their offspring showed up unannounced and unwelcomed for an extended stay with the Weisberg family!

Mr. & Mrs. Liceberg first took up residence on the head of our young daughter. It was winter; she complained that her head itched. Doesn’t everyone’s head itch in winter? Three weeks later, our immediate family, including her two siblings and both of us, had head lice. Several cousins and a couple of our daughter's friends got them too. Our family began a frustrating, time-consuming and expensive quest to become lice-free.
We first called our pediatrician; his advice was to rinse our hair in vinegar, put olive oil on our heads and cover them with shower caps. We did kill a few lice but what a greasy, smelly mess we all were!
On the counsel of our son’s school nurse, we contacted another pediatrician. He recommended a treatment that didn’t work either. Next, we treated our entire family with Nix®. In the meantime, Mr. & Mrs. Liceberg’s family kept growing and growing and growing—while we began to panic. We were washing all our clothes in hot water (and ruining quite a few) while exhausting ourselves cleaning our home and changing our bedding.
Our next step was to hire a person who claimed to be an expert at $75 an hour. She came to our house with a bright light and a magnifying glass. She left us several hundred dollars poorer; we still had a lice problem. We then found a local lice removal business and spent thousands more on multiple treatments before the nightmare finally ended. Our children had missed nearly a week of school; we had both missed several days of work.
During this time, we also spent hours on the Internet and on the phone trying to find the answers we needed to end our ordeal. One name was mentioned again and again: Katie Shepherd. We did some more checking and were impressed with her credentials. We did some market research and decided opening a head lice salon would fill a need in our community. Our vision was that the new business would be child-friendly, inviting and clean, with a professional and educated staff.
After making the decision to open our salon, we were determined to do it right. We traveled to Katie Shepherd’s school, “The Shepherd Institute for Lice Solutions," to learn everything we could about head lice removal methods.
The Nit Pickers is the realization of this vision. While we hope you never need our services, we’ll be right behind you if you do. Contact us for more information or download our brochure.
